4 Ways to Manage Stress as a Business Owner

When you're healthy, your body can handle the stress better.

Everyone who has ever worked or started a business has felt the strain of work-related stress at some point. Even if you enjoy your job, it can be stressful at times. Most people have experienced some level of work-related stress, whether it's the pressure of meeting a deadline or tackling a business problem. However, not all stress is bad stress, some stress can be fulfilling and come from a good place.

Owning a business is stressful and sometimes there's no way to escape the stress. When your work becomes overpowering it can be damaging to both physical and emotional health. As a business owner it is important to recognize when you're experiencing stress symptoms and discover ways to cope or seek professional help.

Being your own boss and feeling stressed and overwhelmed may have an influence on your ability to run your business as well as your relationships with family, clients, and employees. Avoiding the stress only makes matters worse, it is better to take the necessary steps and manage your stress or seek professional help.

Here are 4 ways that can help you manage your stress:

1. Take care of yourself.

As much as the business is important, but your mental and emotional health is also important. Running a business takes a lot out of you and comes with long nights, early mornings an no free time. This kind of lifestyle causes strain on your body and then you add stress to the mix. There is nothing wrong with putting yourself first and don't forget to keep the basics in mind.

Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, get enough sleep and eat on a regular basis. You can also have a day weekly dedicated to self-care where you can do your skin care routine, read a book, watch your favorite tv show and any other event that contributes well to your well-being. Your body can tolerate stress better when you're healthy.

2. Give yourself breaks.

Taking break seems so simple but its not always a very easy thing to do. Breaks are a necessity, and they don't always have to take up so much time.  Find something that relaxes you like taking a walk, video call a friend, go to the nearest store and buy a donut or watch TikTok videos.

Try your best to do something that is not business related. When you get back, you'll have a clearer mind and maybe even new ideas that will benefit your business.

3. Get support.

There is no shame in asking for help when you feel overwhelmed.  Sometimes the stress is so overwhelming that you need assistance from family and friends. If you continue to feel overwhelmed, then you may want to speak to a professional that can help you better manage stress and unhealthy behaviour.

4. Remember what's going right.

It is so easy to get caught up with the negative aspects of your business as you're growing it. When you are too busy focusing on all the things that are wrong, behind schedule, or need to be corrected, its easy to become stressed. You must constantly remind yourself of the things that are going well in your business, that way you better your stress management.  Make a list of all your achievements or any small company milestone. Sometimes you are doing so much better than you think but your stress is overshadowing your progress. Breathe and take a moment to remember the things that have gone right and take it from there.

We all know starting a business has its high and lows. It comes with a lot of hardships, risks and stress but overcoming them is not an impossible task. It is important that you identify your stressors and understand them before they take a negative impact on your life.
